The National Defence Academy is the world's premier tri-service military academy. It transforms 18-year-old students into Commissioned Officers of the Indian Armed Forces. This is a life of absolute discipline, tactical leadership, and commanding troops in high-altitude terrain, naval warships, or supersonic aircraft.
The NDA selection process does not care about your Class 12 board percentage. It operates on two brutal evaluation metrics. First, a highly competitive UPSC written exam designed to filter out 90% of applicants. Second, the 5-Day Services Selection Board (SSB), which uses advanced psychological profiling and stress-induction to measure your innate Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). You cannot fake leadership for 5 days straight.

The UPSC Written Strategy
Phase 1
The NDA written examination is conducted twice a year (NDA I in April, NDA II in September). The exam happens in a single day and consists of two papers. Understanding the cutoffs is more important than knowing everything.
P1
Paper 1: Mathematics (300 Marks)
Consists of 120 questions. Covers Class 11 and 12 Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, and Statistics. Duration is 2.5 hours. There is a negative marking of -0.83 marks for every wrong answer.
P2
Paper 2: General Ability Test (GAT - 600 Marks)
Consists of 150 questions. Part A is pure English (200 marks). Part B is General Knowledge (400 marks), heavily leaning towards Physics, Chemistry, Geography, and Current Affairs. Duration is 2.5 hours. Negative marking is -1.33 per wrong answer.
The Sectional Cutoff Trap: You must secure a minimum of 25% marks independently in the Mathematics paper. If you score a massive 500/600 in GAT but fail the 25% Math cutoff, your GAT paper will not even be evaluated and you will fail the exam. Commerce and Arts students must ensure they clear the Math baseline.
The 5-Day SSB Psychological Framework
Phase 2
The Services Selection Board (SSB) is not a corporate job interview. It is an intensive 5-day assessment of your 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). Over 90% of candidates who clear the written exam are rejected here.
Strict Medical & Physical Standards
Phase 3
It is heartbreaking to clear the written exam and 5 days of SSB, only to be rejected medically. The Armed Forces medical baseline is uncompromising. Know these before you apply.
Vision Standards
Eyesight & Color Blindness
Army: Uncorrected vision 6/36, correctable to 6/6 in better eye and 6/9 in worse eye. Myopia should not exceed -2.5D. Color blindness (CP-III or worse) is a permanent rejection across all branches. Lasik surgery is generally not permitted for NDA candidates.
Structural Integrity
Common Rejections (TR vs PR)
Temporary Rejection (TR): Overweight/Underweight, minor infections. You get 42 days to fix this and appeal. Permanent Rejection (PR): Knock knees, flat feet, pigeon chest, swept-back elbows (carrying angle > 15 degrees). These cannot be appealed.
Discipline
The Tattoo Policy
Strictly regulated. Permanent body tattoos are only permitted on the inner face of the forearm or the reverse side of the palm/back (dorsal) side of the hand. Tattoos on any other part of the body will result in immediate Permanent Rejection.
Air Force Specific
The CPSS Test
Candidates opting for the Flying Branch undergo the Computerized Pilot Selection System. It tests psychomotor skills and hand-eye-leg coordination. You can only take it once in your lifetime. If you fail, you can never become a military pilot.
Training at Khadakwasla
Phase 4
Life at the National Defence Academy is designed to break civilian habits and forge combat leaders. It spans 3 years, divided into 6 academic terms.
01
The Squadron SystemYou are assigned to one of 18 Squadrons (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.). Your squadron becomes your family. You eat, train, and compete together in inter-squadron championships. The discipline is enforced entirely by senior cadets (6th termers).
02
Academics vs. PTYou are completing a full B.A., B.Sc., or B.Tech degree from JNU alongside military training. A typical day starts at 04:00 AM with physical conditioning, followed by academic classes till 14:00, drill/sports in the evening, and studying at night. Time management is brutal.
03
Camp Roja & GreenhornAt the end of specific terms, cadets undergo intense outdoor tactical camps. You march with heavy battle loads (20kg+) through forests, navigate using stars, and dig trenches. This tests physical endurance and mental fortitude under sleep deprivation.

Integration of Female Cadets
Historic Shift
Following a 2021 Supreme Court ruling, NDA is now fully integrated. Here is what female aspirants need to know.
Eligibility & Written Exam
Exact Same Curriculum
The age limit (16.5 to 19.5), academic requirements, and the UPSC written syllabus are exactly the same as for male candidates. There is no separate paper or relaxed academic cutoff for female candidates.
Physical Standards
Adjusted Baselines
While psychological testing (SSB) is identical, the medical and physical benchmarks are tailored for female biology. The minimum height requirement is generally 152 cm (with exceptions for hilly regions/Gorkhas).
Alternative Officer Commissioning Routes
Plan B
If you miss the strict 19.5-year age limit for NDA, your dream of wearing the uniform is not over. The Armed Forces offer several entries post-graduation.
CDS (Combined Defence Services)
The primary route for graduates (Age 19-25). Written exam by UPSC followed by the SSB. You bypass the 3-year Khadakwasla phase and go straight to the 1-year academy training (IMA/OTA/AFA/INA).
Post-Grad Entry
TES (Technical Entry Scheme)
For Class 12 PCM students. If you have a high JEE Mains rank, you are exempted from the UPSC written exam and called directly for the SSB interview for an engineering commission in the Army.
Direct SSB
AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test)
Conducted by the IAF for graduates targeting Flying, Technical, or Ground Duty branches. The written exam is significantly easier than NDA/CDS, focusing heavily on logic and reasoning.

UPSC & SSB Selection Inquiries
12 Questions
Can female candidates apply for the NDA exam?
Yes. Following a historic Supreme Court ruling, unmarried female candidates are now fully eligible to write the NDA examination, clear the SSB, and train at Khadakwasla for a commission in the Armed Forces alongside male cadets.
Is Mathematics compulsory in Class 12 to join the NDA?
Mathematics is compulsory in the UPSC written exam for ALL candidates (Paper 1 is entirely Math). However, you do not need Math in your Class 12 board exams if you are applying solely for the Army wing. To apply for the Air Force and Navy wings, Class 12 Physics and Math are strictly required.
Do I need 90% in my Class 12 Boards to get selected?
No. The NDA does not care about your board percentage as long as you have officially passed Class 12. Your selection is based 100% on your performance in the UPSC written exam and the 5-Day SSB Interview.
What exactly is the SSB testing in those 5 days?
The Services Selection Board (SSB) tests your Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). It is not an academic test; it is a psychological and behavioral evaluation. They assess your courage, group dynamics, decision-making under stress, and integrity to ensure you won't break when leading troops in combat.
Can I clear the SSB Interview if my spoken English is weak?
You need functional fluency. The SSB evaluates your confidence and clarity of thought, not your grammar. While you can use Hindi to express a complex point during the Group Discussion, your primary communication language must be English to effectively command a diverse, pan-India platoon.
What happens if I fail the CPSS test for the Air Force?
The Computerized Pilot Selection System (CPSS) is a once-in-a-lifetime test for pilots. If you fail it, you are permanently disqualified from the flying branch of the Indian Armed Forces. However, you can still be considered for Ground Duty branches or the Army/Navy if you meet their respective cutoffs and medical standards.
What happens if I am medically rejected after clearing SSB?
If you get a Temporary Rejection (TR) for a fixable issue (like overweight or a minor curable condition), you are given 42 days to fix it and report to an Appeal Medical Board. If it is a Permanent Rejection (PR) for a structural issue (like flat feet or color blindness), you can appeal, but overturning a PR is highly unlikely.
What is the difference between NDA and CDS?
NDA is an entry route immediately after Class 12. You spend 3 years getting a degree at the academy, plus 1 year of military training. CDS (Combined Defence Services) is an entry route after Graduation. You enter directly into the 1-year military training academies (IMA/OTA/AFA/INA).
Do I have to pay college fees at the NDA?
No. The cost of your training, food, accommodation, and the degree you earn at NDA is completely borne by the Government of India. In your final year of specialized academy training, you even receive a monthly stipend of ₹56,100.
What degree do I get from the National Defence Academy?
Cadets who graduate from NDA Khadakwasla are awarded a B.A., B.Sc., or B.Tech degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, alongside their military commissioning.
Are tattoos allowed in the Armed Forces?
Strictly speaking, no. The only exceptions are permanent body tattoos on the inner face of the forearm or the reverse side of the palm. Tattoos on any other part of the body will result in an immediate permanent medical rejection. Candidates belonging to specific tribes have certain exceptions based on documentation.
How physically fit do I need to be before joining NDA?
You do not need to be a commando before joining; the academy will build your stamina over 3 years. However, the UPSC advises candidates to condition themselves to be able to run 2.4 km in 15 minutes, do a minimum of 20 push-ups, and skip rope. Basic fitness prevents stress injuries during the brutal first term.
