The Indian film industry has fundamentally decoupled from the traditional Bollywood theatrical model. The entry of massive streaming networks (Netflix, Prime Video, JioCinema) has decentralized content production. Studios are actively bypassing legacy gatekeepers to fund independent directors, specialized cinematographers, and highly technical post-production artists who can deliver international-grade, long-form episodic television.

The Set Hierarchy

A film set operates with military precision. While "Director" is the most visible title, the industry relies heavily on specialized technical roles that command significant daily rates.

The Director / Showrunner

The ultimate creative authority. Responsible for interpreting the screenplay, guiding actor performances, and maintaining the unified visual aesthetic across the entire production.

Director of Photography (DoP)

The chief of the camera and lighting crews. A highly technical role requiring deep knowledge of lens selection, camera sensor science (ARRI/RED), and practical lighting setups.

Post-Production (Editor / Colorist)

The final sculptors. Editors assemble the narrative pacing using NLE software (Premiere Pro/Avid), while Colorists utilize DaVinci Resolve to establish the final visual tone and mood.

Production Fees & Contracts

The film industry operates almost entirely on the "Gig Economy" model. Professionals are hired as independent contractors per project, negotiating specific "Day Rates" or lump-sum project fees.

Standard Contract Rates

The Production Pipeline

Understanding the macro-logistics of how a film is actually assembled is what separates an amateur video creator from an employable film professional.

1

Development & Pre-Production

The blueprint phase. This involves formatting screenplays in Final Draft, creating visual Pitch Decks, securing funding, scouting physical locations, and locking in cast contracts and crew deal memos.

2

Principal Photography

The actual execution on set. Managing the daily "Call Sheet," coordinating grip and electric (G&E) departments, and ensuring the DoP captures the required coverage before losing daylight.

3

Post-Production & DRM

Ingesting raw footage, executing the offline edit, sound mixing, and color grading. Final deliverables must be formatted to meet the strict technical specifications (DRM) required by platforms like Netflix or Amazon.

Common Professional Inquiries

Do I absolutely need to go to Film School?
No. Unlike medicine or law, film is an unregulated, portfolio-driven industry. While institutes like FTII (Pune) or SRFTI provide excellent networking and access to high-end gear, many of today's top directors and cinematographers are entirely self-taught, hired purely based on their short films or commercial reels.
Do I need to buy expensive camera gear to start?
Absolutely not. The industry standard is to rent gear per project. Professional DoPs rarely own the ₹50 Lakh ARRI Alexa cameras they shoot on; the production budget covers the rental house fees. As a beginner, mastering composition and lighting is far more important than owning a high-end sensor.
How do I pitch a script to an OTT platform like Netflix?
Major platforms generally do not accept unsolicited scripts for legal reasons. You must route your pitch through an established production house or a registered literary agent. Creating a visually compelling "Pitch Deck" alongside a polished "Pilot Script" is mandatory for these meetings.
What is the difference between Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve?
Adobe Premiere Pro is the industry standard for Non-Linear Editing (NLE)—cutting and arranging the story. DaVinci Resolve was originally built purely for high-end Color Grading (manipulating the contrast and color science of the image), though it has now evolved into a full editing suite as well.
