The UPSC Three-Tier Selection Funnel Recruitment Process

The UPSC maintains an incredibly high standard. The process evaluates your intellectual depth, your physical endurance, and your leadership personality.

Phase 01
Written Exam (Papers I & II)
Held on the same day. Paper I (Objective) in the morning, Paper II (Descriptive) in the afternoon.
Phase 02
PET & Medical Test
A physical fitness test (running, long jump) followed by a comprehensive medical board evaluation.
Phase 03
The Personality Test
A 150-mark interview at Dholpur House (UPSC Delhi). Tests your leadership and decision-making.
Phase 04
Final Merit & Academy
Allocation to BSF, CRPF, CISF, SSB, or ITBP based on merit, followed by rigorous officer training.

The Real Filter: Mastering Paper II Exam Strategy

While many students can clear the objective Paper I (which is very similar to general competitive exams), Paper II is where future officers are truly tested.

The Evaluation Rule You Must Know

Paper II (General Studies, Essay, and Comprehension) is evaluated ONLY if you score above the minimum qualifying cutoff in Paper I. If you fail Paper I by even 0.5 marks, your brilliantly written Paper II will never be read by the examiner. You must balance your preparation equally.

Component (Paper II) Marks Language Option
4 Essays (Topics: Security, History, Geo) 80 Marks (4 x 20) English OR Hindi (Your choice)
Arguments (For and Against) 40 Marks (2 x 20) English Only
Report Writing & Precis 35 Marks English Only
Reading Comprehension & Grammar 45 Marks English Only

Assistant Commandants belong to the same Pay Level 10 (Group A) as an entry-level IAS or IPS officer. In terms of police hierarchy, an AC is equivalent to a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) or Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in the state police.
You need a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university. Final year students are also highly encouraged to apply, provided they can present their final degree before the DAF (Detailed Application Form) stage.
The minimum age is 20 years, and the maximum age is 25 years for General category candidates. There is an age relaxation of 3 years for OBC candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.

An AC starts at Pay Level 10 with a Basic Pay of ₹56,100. Adding Dearness Allowance, HRA, Transport Allowance, and special field/risk allowances, the starting monthly in-hand salary generally ranges between ₹85,000 to ₹1.1 Lakhs.

Yes, there is a 1/3rd negative marking in Paper I (Objective). For every wrong answer, 0.33 marks of the assigned question weight are deducted. There is no negative marking in the descriptive Paper II.
This is a crucial detail: Your Paper II (Descriptive) is evaluated ONLY if you score above the designated cutoff marks in Paper I. If you fail Paper I, your Paper II answer sheet is simply not checked.
